The Chronicles of my Wardrobe

There was a pile of shirts waiting for me when I got home last night. In fact it was more than shirts, there were a couple of pairs of shorts too.

They weren’t shiny new clothes, they were some old favourites that had been hanging around for many years. Some were clothes that I’d worn reasonably recently, most hadn’t made their way out of the wardrobe for a very long time.

Pauline had selected the clothes as possibilities to be removed from circulation. I went through the pile and agreed on every one. I then got really ruthless and went through some other clothes and picked quite a number of items to be culled from my collection.

Shirts, socks, jocks, jumpers, pants, nothing was safe.

I try not to become emotionally attached to clothes but you know how it is, you get something as a gift or another piece of clothing reminds you of a certain time or event. Then there are those clothes that wear out over a long period of time and you don’t actually notice the holes or how faded it is until someone else draws your attention to it.

How can I ever know whether Narnia is at the back of my wardrobe if I can’t ever get past all the old cycling T-Shirts?

I’m slowly learning that while clothes may maketh the man, old tattered clothes that have passed their usefulness only maketh the wardrobe messy.

  • I just cleared my closet the other day and packed up three bags of clothes I can’t wear anymore.. 🙁 *sigh*….LOL new year resolution.. to fit into them by middle of the year! LOL 🙂

  • old tattered clothes that have passed their usefulness only maketh the wardrobe messy.

Isn’t that the truth! I have the same problem in my wardrobe — old clothes that I’ll probably never wear again. My problem isn’t so much an emotional attachment, it’s simply forgetting that they’re there at all!

  • Do you think you could send Pauline over to my place and help me out a little? I’ve begged a couple of friends to be ruthless with me, but I think they are afraid I’ll beat them up! Of course, you DO realize that as an artist, I HAVE to keep most of the stuff in my wardrobe. You never know when something will come back into fashion!

Anyhow, I hope you have a very wonderful 2006!

  • I think Jesus was right into making sure your cupboard is clean and that you’re not hanging on to old things! However, secretly getting rid of clothes may be considered a teensy bit bad?!?

  • Rodney, from what I’ve seen on the street and in shopping malls you’ve gotten farther than most guys get with self-realization about their clothes. Keep “putting on the new man.” Great blog!

  • This wins the x facta award for best New Year post. Was I running a cometition? No. But just thought I’d express appreciation for a well written thoughtful piece.

  • Well done, Rodney. I made a similar journey of discovery through my closet this week, discarding unused garments ruthlessly.

    I feel older now…but also…cleaner. 😉
