Home Improvement

If it’s something that we all so desperately want, why is it so often such a struggle?

Our hopes and dreams for our families are often at odds with the realities of our everyday life. Surveys continue to highlight the fact that we want something better. We want to be better parents, better partners, more effective in growing healthy families, but how do we learn the skills we need to be more effective in these areas?

Building strong families and family relationships is the theme of Home Improvement, a free six week series giving simple, practical hints on happy family life. Home Improvement begins at 9:30 this Sunday morning and runs each Sunday until Fathers’ Day (3rd September) at Altone Park Leisure Centre, 332 Benara Road, Beechboro.

I’m particularly looking forward to the series because I get to introduce a number of regular talkback guests from my morning radio programme at 98.5 Sonshine FM. My live guests over the six weeks will include Family Specialist Heather McEwan, Psychologist and Counsellor Genevieve Milnes, Business Consultant Glen Smyth and Life Skills Trainer Jill Bonanno.

Home Improvement is being presented by Beechboro Baptist Church and aims to provide a way forward for families in our community.

Peter Wight from the church says the series will meet a real need. “We can study for years to further our careers but if you ask most people they’ll tell you that family and relationships are more important than career. Good family life doesn’t just happen. We need to take steps towards learning how to ‘do family’ effectively.”

Peter says Home Improvement is all about serving people in the local neighbourhood. “We are committed to our community. We want to provide people with the tools to create the kind of family they really desire.”

Family life has perhaps never faced so many challenges. Unrealistic media images, the pace of life, the speed of change, the pull of materialism, financial and work pressures and the fragmentation of community all impact on family life in contemporary Australia.

If you want to develop skills that will make a big impact on your family and relationships, you’re more than welcome to join us this Sunday. Make sure you say hello and we can grab a coffee together.

  • This is one of my favorite shows! To be able to watch them in the original language I bought them on DVD (in Germany and France all the stuff is not subtitled but translated, which I think is really sad – you don´t get many phrases and jokes right that way…)

The show runs (in german) every working day on VOX – since years. They always start over and over again. I just love it. (And in one episode even my hometown is mentioned! Wilson there says, basketball was invented in Braunschweig! :-)…)

It´s a great family show, giving all the up and down things that happen, but always with a blinking eye…
