The fragrance of life

I started this morning with fresh brewed coffee then a big breakfast of bacon and eggs.

Unfortunately none of it got anywhere near my mouth.

Cycling in to work this morning I rode past the local drive through coffee place and took in the wonderful aroma of fresh coffee. A few metres on I cycled past a house that exuded the not so delicate fragrance of a full cooked breakfast. Yum.

I often smell fresh baked goods as I cycle past by the local shopping centre and as I get closer to work the smell of pies and sausage rolls wafts across from the nearby bakery.

It’s great to be on a bike and take in all the wondrous food smells as I whiz past. The best part is that sniffing food is a guaranteed low fat diet.

I love the fact that I can take in so much more of the world on two wheels. The smell of rain, the flowers I pass, even the less fragrant smells let me know that I’m alive and experiencing the journey rather than being shut inside a metal box and just passing through.

What smells do you enjoy as you travel? If you do get from A to B in a car, make sure you wind the windows down sometime and take in the local aromas.

  • morning coffee is the most soothing of smells … :o)

that and spring rain, damp earth and lilacs blooming …

the coffee i smell every morning … as for my other favourites, well i have to wait another 2 months atleast!

  • Yeah, smells are great as you cycle. You are part of what’s around you.
This morning Fay and I wandered around on the mtbs and called on an old couple in their 70s and stayed for morning tea. Then on the way back into town I noticed a cricket game on. Turned out to be Dubbo High School versus Albury HS. Watched a bit and then decided I’d wander back straight after an early lunch to see our guys batting.
If only more people would give cycling a go eh? Having said that, we have a strong BUG group here in Dubbo (Bicycle User Group). They are all over NSW.

  • It’s amazing how much smells can strike an emotional bond. I suffered a head injury about 12 years ago and have not had much by way of olfactory senses ever since. But every now and then, I catch a wiff of something and (on occasion) I even remember what that smell is connected to. Thankfully, I can still smell coffee – unfortunately I can still smell tobacco smoke.

  • The smell of the Australian bush in the rain is hard to beat. There’s just something about wet eucalyptus – the scent just seems that little bit stronger when it rains.

  • Hey Rodney! Thanks for the comment. I’m gonna try and be more frequent on my blog this year, but unfortunately it’s still dependant on the reliability of the computer at the college….nothing new there (!!)

    (ps…holidays are going well…only 2 days left though… 🙁 )

  • I work at home so when I walk to the office (Which is on the otherside of the patio) all I can smell is my dog! Not good. I should do something about that.

  • Well, it can also be somewhat disgusting when you are right in the middle… When I come home from town on the pushbike, I have to pass the big rubbish-bin of the neighbour-complex, and the path is really narrow there. I always try to hold my breath.
Neither do I like the exhaust fumes in the city, especially on hot days (where I am far away from at the moment).
But also in the city it smells good sometimes. When the sugar-factory is working for example 🙂
