Amazing Grace

Emily and I headed to the movies a few nights back. We went to the Astor Theatre in Mt Lawley for a preview screening of Amazing Grace which will be released into Australian cinemas next week.

The movie follows the story of William Wilberforce and his campaign to abolish slavery. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery so the movie comes at a very important time.

Wilberforce showed us that we can fight injustice and win. We can take on the big causes and triumph. He also shows us that the fight isn’t always an easy one. Wilberforce almost gave up his campaign after having his legislation rejected year after year.

Directed by Michael Apted, the movie features Ioan Gruffudd as Wilberforce, Albert Finney as John Newton and England’s youngest ever Prime Minister, William Pitt, is played by Benedict Cumberbatch. There are many other fin performances that make the movie a delight to experience.

The movie is beautifully shot and incredibly inspiring. If you’re someone who has a passion for social justice or you want to see someone living out a gutsy kind of faith, this movie will definitely move you.

One of the segments on my morning radio programme at 98.5 Sonshine FM is a fortnightly look at what’s on at the movies.

Aaron Kamp has been reviewing movies for some time and he posts his reviews at Cinemaniacs, part of the YFC website. Every couple of weeks we look at what’s in the cinemas and what’s new on DVD.

He was at the screening too and we discussed his thoughts on the movie yesterday morning.

  • Hey Rodney! I had the opportunity to see this movie at Parliament House at the end of last month with Rev Fred Nile, Dr Gordon Moyes, Dr Keith Suter and some execs from Walden media and also Heritage HM, who are the Australian distributors.
I loved it, but because it was in a small theatrette, i had a few heads in the way! I’m definitely going to see it when it hits the big screen.
