Christmas Already?

I know that there has been all kinds of Christmas items in shops for many weeks already but some people seem to have pushed the accelerator big time in their Christmas preparations.

I’ve already seen a house with it’s front window covered in Christmas lights and sporting a big CHRISTMAS GREETINGS banner.

The local council must think that Christmas is in November too because their Christmas street decorations went up earlier this week.

The City of Perth lights get switched on tonight with all the usual celebrations and it’s not even half way through November.

Are these people trying to taunt parents of young children? How can we tell our kids that Christmas is still many weeks away when they see symbols of Christmas all around them?

I’m sure there used to be an unwritten rule that you didn’t put up your decorations until the 1st of December at the earliest. That still gives the kids 24 days to nag their parents about the latest toys for Christmas. Isn’t that enough?

I’m just glad that we get to strip away the tinsel and think about the real meaning of Christmas all year round in our home.

  • So this goes on in Australia too, huh? I thought it was just here in the good old USA. Yep, Christmas is coming waaay too early. I quoted James Lileks on my blog the other day, about the holidays all running together: “I expect that before I die I will see Santa Bunny and Turkey McChocula selling patriotic red-white-and-blue Valentine Pie.”

  • Amen to that. Yeah we have lots of Christmas stuff up here in the US as well. Just for everyones information….no lights, Christmas music, etc…till the day after Thanksgiving…or in Minnesota till there is at least 5 inches of snow on the ground. Whichever comes first.

  • Take your kids into David Jones in the city and admire the Christmas trees. Every single one of them, especially the way ALL the lights work.
    PLease, for me….
