Have you noticed how quickly we can begin to consider things around us as essential?
We had power failure in the local area around the radio station this morning so we were running on our emergency power supply for a couple of hours. Our studios were fine but there were lights and computers off around the rest of the building as we tried to lighten the load on the generator. People from the buildings around us were wandering the street. Without power they couldn’t work.
Of course there are lots of other things that we now consider essential that we didn’t even a few years back. Try going a day without a computer. What about mobile phones? A lot of people feel at a complete loss without a phone on them at all times. Even a day or two without a car can send a lot of us into a spin. Our wallets are full of pieces of plastic that we supposedly can’t live without.
So much of our modern lifestyle has only been around for such a short time yet we’ve come to rely on a lot of this stuff so much.
I know that for me it’s a reminder to take a closer look at life so that I can decide what really is essential and what is just tying me to things with no eternal value.

Rodney, you are hitting close to home for me right now. I always have my cell phone on me and it stresses me out if I don’t have it. Also, I was in an accident a few weeks ago and it totaled my car, so now I am dependent on my wife’s car until I buy a new one. We have to totally coordinate our schedules to get us where we need to go. I was telling my wife this morning that the Lord is really teaching me something thru this, probably what it’s like to be dependent on someone else. He probably wants me to learn to be more dependent on Him. It would probably be harder to live without a computer than to live without a car, though.
Good post! very thought provoking.
Thanks Rodney for making me feel like “quality readership”! Congrats on a year of blogging, and keep up the good work!
