Would you like fries with that?

It’s been a busy day so far.

I only rode about 40km on my Saturday morning ride after my rear tyre picked up a piece of glass. Thankfully it was while we were on our way out to find the Barrack Street group so I was able to stop, change the tube, then wait for the group to head back past where I was waiting so I could jump back on.

After coffee I headed home to shower, shave and change before taking Emily to her dancing lesson. I then doubled back home to get Pauline and James. We picked up Emily on our way to McDonald’s Tuart Hill where I was going to be a celebrity at McHappy Day.

I tucked myself away for a couple of hours in the drive-through area. I stood outside near the menu board with a bucket to collect donations as the cars came through. Fellow Sonshine FM announcers Ash Wright and Robyn Haines joined me for part of that time helping me to coax a few dollars from the endless stream of vehicles.

I was surprised at how many people were willing to dig deep to help the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Big cars, little cars, old cars, new cars all stopped to throw a few dollars my way. In the 2 hours I stood there, there would have been hundreds of cars pass through. Less than a dozen didn’t stop to add some coins to the bucket.

I even had a guy in his 50s in a very nice new Mercedes stop and chat for a while. He held up the queue for some time as he slurred his speech and told me what a good looking guy I was. I’m sure his state of intoxication added to his appreciation of my physique. (Even a fat, middle aged guy like me can look good after a few beers.) I had to point out to him a couple of times that he should drive through to the next window to pick up his order. He leered a little longer then went on his way.

After my fund raising efforts, Pauline turned up with the kids and we all had Maccas for lunch. The kids had Happy Meals (though I’m not sure that the cows that contributed to their burgers were too happy) and Pauline and I had some of the healthier new additions to the menu. Mmmm.
