History Book

Cycling to work this morning I spied a very faded book on the back parcel shelf of a car that I was behind at the lights. It was obviously a well used, well worn book. Even the plastic cover hadn’t saved it from the ravages of time.

I noticed on the spine of the book, which was pointed toward the back window, that it was a Perth street directory from 1996. Knowing that the new year’s street directories are usually released several months before the end of the previous year, that would mean that this one was compiled and released in 1995.

I wonder what use a 10 year old street directory would be apart from a quick history reference book. Just think of all the new subdivisions and suburbs that have sprung up in the past 10 years. Then there are all the freeway and highway extensions that have been completed in the last decade. Throw in the changes to all the one way streets in the city and the renaming of roads here and there.

We try to stay up to date with our directory because the roads we normally need to look up are the new ones. I think I’ve spotted a wonderful opportunity for a birthday or Christmas gift idea for the gentleman driving the car this morning.
