Ever have one of those nights when your mind just won’t shut down? I had one of those last night.
I had a meeting to go to which finished sometime after 10:00 pm. I then drove home, got myself organised for bed and jumped right in. Then I just lay there.
I desperately wanted to get to sleep but it wasn’t going to happen. All the details of the meeting and some other things I’m involved with at the moment kept buzzing through my brain.
Every now and then I’d look at my bedside clock to see that it was getting later and later. Of course that only served to make me even more desperate to get to sleep, which in turn made it harder to relax and more difficult to get to sleep.
I don’t know how long I lay there wanting to get to sleep but I eventually nodded off. The next thing I knew my alarm went off and it was time to get up.
I sometimes wish that we just had an off switch so we could shut ourselves down at night with a timer to wake us up at the right time the next morning. It’d be so nice to be able to power down whenever we chose to do so wouldn’t it?

An off switch, now that would be fantastic! My normal routine is bed at 9:30, get to sleep relatively quickly, but then wake at 1:30am, drift back to sleep and have stupid dreams until 4:30am (which make me all tense and worried and prevent me from sleeping properly), then finally get some restful sleep until 5:30am when I either get up for a bike ride or my 2 year old comes into mummy and daddies bed. Must learn to relax!
Yeah, I hate it when I go through the “can’t sleep” routine. And then, as you say, the stress kicks in…
On the bright side, it’s usually quite easy to fall asleep the next night!
I’m certainly looking forward to falling off to sleep easily tonight.
