What's with the magazines?

It’s all a bit strange if you ask me.

Pauline and I headed into Northbridge tonight to see Enduring Love. Pauline won a free pass to a preview screening. It’s an odd but strangely engaging movie.

My sister graciously agreed to look after Emily and James. I needed to get some dinner together very quickly in between an afternoon meeting and the time we had to go, so I popped a chicken in the oven. Pauline suggested I grab some chips from the local Fish & Chip shop as a quick way of turning the chicken into a meal.

I went to the shop and bought $3 of chips. That was plenty for us 4 and my sister, who joined us for dinner. We grab chips from this Fish & Chip shop to fill out a meal every now and then and we find them to be an extremely cost effective alternative to actual food.

The strange thing that I find about this shop is their magazine selection. The place is full of fishing magazines. Endless pages with pictures of men holding up fish that they’ve caught while they sport silly grins. There are discussions on the best lures; advertisements for the latest rods and reels; and reviews on small aluminium boats that all look the same to me.

Yes I know that it’s a Fish & Chip shop, but think about it. Do you wander into a steak restaurant and expect to read Cattle Farmers Weekly or Abbatoir News while you’re there? Do I drop into a chicken take away to find publications promising perfect poultry processing and production? No.

I know that fish have to be caught and killed before I eat them and that doesn’t cause me any problem, I’d rather it be them than me, but I still have no desire to read about the process while I’m waiting for my portion of deep fried shark.

I hate to rave on about something so insignificant, but honestly, the magazines at this shop even make the literary selection at the local doctor’s surgery seem downright fascinating.
