Another man's wife

I went to see another man’s wife last night. I sat mesmerised by her, hanging off her every word.

Mind you, I can’t see that there’s any future in it. She’s married to Elvis Costello and nowhere near as beautiful as Pauline.

However, she can sing like an angel and her piano skills are absolutely amazing.

After a throw away line during a weather update on-air yesterday, Pauline and I ended up at the Diana Krall concert at Sandalford Estate Winery.

The forecast said that rain would arrive in the evening and continue until the morning. I made a passing comment that Diana Krall was playing an outdoor concert and cheekily said that if anyone had tickets but didn’t like getting wet, I’d sit in the rain for a couple of hours listening to her.

Almost immediately a guy rang the radio station trying to sell me a couple of tickets. He bought them for $90 each and would sell them for $80 each. The reason I hadn’t bought tickets already is that I couldn’t afford them even if they were $20 each. (I can assure you that not all radio announcers make plenty of money. Especially those who work for community Christian radio stations.)

Later in the day a lady rang offering me a pair of free tickets. Wow. (Big thanks to my sister, Margaret, who not only let me use her car to drive across the other side of the city to pick up the tickets, but looked after Emily and James while we went out.)

We arrived about 15 minutes before Diana took to the stage and while it was quite cold, it didn’t rain a drop. The rain had arrived earlier in the afternoon and had already rained itself out.

She played for just over 90 minutes and it was fantastic. She was backed up by a guitarist, drummer and double bass. These guys were brilliant musicians and had plenty of opportunity to prove it but she more than matched them with her skills on the grand piano.

As for her voice ….. what can I say? I could have stayed there listening all night.

My main problem now is that she has released quite a number of albums and I don’t own a single one. I’ll have to hang out until my birthday in July and drop hints until then.

  • I’m so jealous! Diana Krall is one of my favourite mellow musical artists. Glad you had the chance to get up close and personal.

    Any photos?

  • Unfortunately our camera died last weekend. 🙁

We were quite a distance from the stage anyway. If we had a camera I probably would have made a quick trip towards the front for a snap or two but it was still magnificent.
