Chris from Life Cycle (a great read by the way) has tagged me with a music meme. Thanks Chris.
1. Total amount of music on your computer?
Not much. I’ve got an album that I converted to MP3 to put onto an MP3 player and a couple of other tracks that I’ve picked up from here and there.
2. CD you last bought?
I haven’t bought myself a CD for such a long time. We’ve got almost 500 CDs and I’d say that around 300 of them would be mine. The last couple of CDs I’ve bought would have been gifts for Pauline. Probably the most recent would be Stardust by Rod Stewart. The most recent CD that Pauline bought me is Everybody’s Talkin’ – The Very Best of Harry Nilsson. I desperately want to get some Dianna Krall on CD. Maybe I should drop some more hints for my birthday next month.
3. What is the song you last listened to before reading this message?
Emily was playing a couple of songs on the keyboard. She then turned on the automatic play and selected “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, so that’s the last song I listened to.
4. 5 songs you often listen to, or which mean a lot to you?
Come on Home by Everything But The Girl. This is the song that turned me onto their music.
Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison. My daughter Emily has brown eyes. This one has always been a special song that I’ve sung with her.
Sweet Baby James by James Taylor. Emily’s song is Brown Eyed Girl and Sweet Baby James is the song that I sing for James.
I Still Believe by The Call. Christianity has been turned into something far too safe and predictable over the years. I like Michael Been’s (lead singer and songwriter for The Call) take on faith. A lot The Call’s music deals with a faith that doesn’t break when it’s faced with the hard realities of life, one that doesn’t look for the easy answers or expect God to bless us while others are suffering. That’s something real and something I can identify with. Here’s a few of the lyrics.
But I still believe
I still believe
Through the pain
And the grief
Through the lies
Through the storms
Through the cries
And through the wars
Oh, I still believe
Heart of Ice by Joe Jackson. This is a great song from Joe’s Body and Soul album. The music builds for several minutes and then as it reaches it’s peak the vocal begins with the very simple lyric repeated a few times, then it’s over. Brilliant. I just love the simplicity of the song and the imagery of the lyrics which I’ve included below.
Take a knife
Cut out this heart of ice
Hold it high
Walk into the sun
I could pick dozens of songs that mean a lot to me from Maria McKee, Style Council, Bob Dylan and many others but I’m only allowed 5 so that’s it for the moment.
Now I’m meant to pick a few others to give the music meme a go. So go to it Amanda, Mr. Middleton and Amelia.

Hi Rodney. Thanks for the tag, I’ve answered the questions on my blog and passed on the tag.
My daughter has brown eyes and when she was a little thing she thought Van was singing to her. I wonder how many girls with brown eyes love that song.
Hi Rodney
If you get the chance check out Baggas’ Blog.
After you tagged Amanda she tagged Baggas, and his answers to the music questions blew me away. He has 6481 songs on his iPod (that?s what he carries around with him) and over 20 000 at home.
That man really loves his music.
Good taste in music Rodney, thanks for tagging me! I haven’t done the questions on my blog yet, but will do as soon as I get the chance.
