G8 slashes debt by 40 billion dollars

This report from NEWS.com.au heralds the good news.

THE world’s wealthiest countries have agreed to write off more than $US40 billion ($AU52.14 billion) of impoverished nations’ debts in a drive to free Africa from hunger and disease.

The deal was struck by finance ministers from the Group of Eight industrialised nations in London overnight after months of tense negotiations.

Leaders will now consider proposals for doubling aid at a summit in Gleneagles, Scotland, next month.

What an amazing development inthe push to destroy poverty. It’s still a long way short from being the whole picture but it is a giant step forward. The fight against poverty is moving forward. Let’s make sure it continues to gain momentum.
