Good sense prevails

Until this morning, freed hostage Douglas Wood was saying that he was considering returning to Iraq. Apparently he thought it was still worth the risk for the great business opportunities on offer. Today, it’s a different story.

This story from News.com.au tells us that he has bowed to family pressure and agreed never to return to Iraq, where he was captured and held hostage for 47 days.

We’re told that he has made the decision on the advice of his family. Of course this would be the same family that fought so hard, on his behalf, for his release. Maybe they explained to him that ‘great business opportunities’ are not worth losing your life over. Maybe he finally realised that if he went back he would not only be under the same danger as any other westerner, he would be a target.

Since being freed, he has apologised for asking US and Australian troops to withdraw from Iraq. Of course he said those things with a number of guns pointed at his head. He now says that he wants the troops to stay put. Surely that would be enough to make him a prized catch by those in the business of hostage taking in Iraq.

I’m glad that Douglas Wood has been freed. I’m even more glad that he has decided to avoid Iraq in the future.
