Pauline and I had a big night out on Friday. We went to the opening night of Circe du Soleil’s Quidam. We took the opportunity to go out for dinner before the show and then arrived in plenty of time to get settled in the Grande Chapiteau, which as far as I can understand is French for big tent. Mind you, French was never my best subject at school.
It was a spectacular event. I’m not sure that we followed the story that was weaved throughout the programme but the performers were amazing. People were leaping over each other, dangling from the overhead rigging, displaying amazing feats of balance; it was rather incredible. It was all choreographed superbly and just when you thought they couldn’t pull off anything more difficult, they’d leave you with your heart in your mouth.
Then there were the moments of comedy placed throughout the show which brought the audience to life. Some more than others with several audience members being hauled on stage to take part in a some impromptu drama. At that point I was glad that our seats weren’t too close to the stage.
Once the show was over we headed across the road to the Concert Hall for the After Party with the cast and a who’s who of Perth’s media and sporting personalities. It was a little loud and squashy so we didn’t stay too long. I guess we’re getting old. I know I am. The news paper told us the next morning that those tasty little pastry things I was eating were brandied chicken liver profiteroles. Very nice. The paper also mentioned that we were sipping vintage wine. Almost right. I had a glass of red but Pauline stuck to the lemonade. It was a great bash all round.
Just by stepping through the entrance to the Grande Chapiteau we weren’t just treated to a fantastic show, we were transported to a bizarre and extraordinary parallel universe for a couple of hours.

Cirque du Soleil is an amazing spectacle.
I’m likely heading to Vegas in the fall, and hope to catch their permanent shows there, if only to see if Mystere matches what I’ve visualized from the soundtrack.
Haven’t seen Quidam yet, but I’m hooked on the track “Zydeko” off the soundtrack. Used it as background for a couple of (high-mania) presentations. Works wonders. Would love to see how that fits in to the show.
yup, cirque de soleil is definitely amazing.
They’re one of the few folks who are actually able to create something so magical and fantastical and yet not make it look cheesy.
my only regret is that I almost always seem to miss catching their live performances by being out of town!
Better luck next time I hope!
