Tax time

I know it’s a different case in various parts of the world, but here in Australia, our financial year runs from the 1st of July to the 30th of June. After the 30th of June we prepare and lodge a tax return in the hope that we may get a few shekels back from the Australian Tax Office.

We’re almost half way through July already so it’s time to get organised and lodge our information. We’re notoriously late with getting our returns to the tax office but last year was a little different. I actually sent all our information off to our accountant on the 1st of July. I’m sure he was shocked. He usually has to send us emails telling us how close we’re getting to the deadline months after the financial year has finished.

This year we haven’t been quite so quick. I’m hoping we’ll get our details together by the end of the month. I’m also hoping we’ll get a tax refund but I don’t think it’ll be anything worth writing home about even if we do. What are you like with getting your return lodged? Have you already got your refund cheque or will you still be trying to find all your receipts in March next year?

I’ve got to admit that I did enjoy getting in early last year. It was such a relief. Contrary to my usual mode of operation, it seems that procrastination is not always the best policy.

  • I am terrible. Despite usually receiving a decent refund I always leave it to the last minute.
It always seems like such a major effort to find all the documents required which is what makes me procrastinate. The reality is that it usually only takes a couple of hours to get everything together, and then my accountant does the actual return for me so I really don’t have any excuses.

  • My husband, who is in construction work full time here in the US, works for his mom who is a tax accountant during tax season (Jan-April 15 here). For the past several years, I’ve worked with in my brother-in-law’s tax office. Needless to say, those months are very busy and we usually end up filing an extension to get the paperwork in. (We still have to pay by the deadline–we try to overestimate so we don’t get socked with a penalty.) We have till August 15 to finish our tax paperwork–but is it finished yet? Nooooooo

  • I usually lodge mine on-line, and get the refund deposited directly into my savings account. Half the time I forget to check for it!
