Back to school

Funny how some things stay with you long after the event. I was thinking about last night’s visit to our kids’ school last night and visiting their classrooms and it took me back to my own primary school days. (Yes. That is going back an awfully long time.)

I remember one instance where our parents were invited into our classroom to see our work.

Mum was there looking at my work when she realised that there was one girl who didn’t have either of her parents there. I remember mum turning to her and asking to see her work. She asked her questions about what she had been doing and looked through some of her books with her.

It was a very powerful lesson in making sure that no one gets left out. I know that the girl would have preferred to have had her own mum or dad there but for whatever reason they obviously weren’t available at that time. That act, backed up by everything else that mum and dad taught me, helped me to realise that my responsibilities don’t begin and end within my own family.
