Little known facts #374

It is very difficult to stop Dunlop Volleys squeaking on a shopping centre floor if it’s been raining outside and their soles have become wet.

  • I love Volleys! Blue Volleys with the laces not tied but with a ‘figure of 8’ knot in the ends was my trade mark shoe for years. But people kept bagging me out over them. Possibly with good reason.
For example, when I left a parish where I was Youth Minister, they gave me a pair of baby Volleys sprayed with gold paint and mounted on a board… with the laces tied in my trademark way. Very cute.
Anyway, people eventually talked me into going to an ‘Athlete’s Foot’ store. I went in and asked to buy a pair of sand shoes. After the sales rep picked himself up off the floor and recovered from his laughing fit, he talked me into buying something called cross-trainers. Brooks brand or something like that.
Gee, things have changed since those good-old Volleys became my best friend.

  • Volleys are the best! As a kid in Tasmania, one of my favourite pastimes was what I call “rock hopping” at the Cataract Gorge in Launceston. During summer, the water level was pretty low in the river, exposing a very rocky river bed, with lots of large boulders. My best mate and myself used to walk along the river bed, which required jumping from one rock to another. To do this your shoes needed to have fantastic grip so that you didn’t go sliding off into the river, or over the edge of the boulder. Volleys were just the shoe for the task, fantastic grip!! But yes, they did squeek a bit on linoleum floors!
