Have you ever been to Perth’s domestic airport as the sun is just setting? We were there last night to welcome Colin Buchanan to Perth.
As we were driving into the car park I could hear a very loud noise. When we got out of the car it was almost deafening.
There were hundreds of 28 Parrots perched in nearby trees screeching as loudly as they could. The sound echoed back off the buildings and increased the volume. There was no way I could hear any aircraft noise with the parrots screeching so loudly.
These parrots are considered a pest by farmers but I suppose that being a city person I see things a bit differently. I think that they’re a very attractive looking bird. As deafening as it was I even found they’re screeching a bit of an unusual treat.
Pauline asked one of the airport workers if it’s like that every night. They answered with a fairly desperate, “yes”.
I suppose that while it was an interesting experience for us, if I had to hear it every night the novelty would wear off fairly quickly.

those birds make noise all through the night. i was there at 1am and they were still making noise.
This time of year you don’t park under trees in Texas. In a second they will fill with hundreds of birds who are flying south for the winter. That many birds and 90-100 degree heat can ruin a paint job….
While in Kalbarri, we visited the parrot house (place where they have heaps of different parrots.) They also told us about how somebody had released some parrots in Perth that had bred and become pests. Maybe these are the same birds. The bird house was quite an incredible place to visit.
I haven’t been to Kalbarri for years but I do remember the parrot place. I’m not a bird fan but that place is incredible.
I’ve never been to Perth, but it sounds lovely and I hope to visit there someday.
There’s a lot of bushland out there at the airport, and it’s pretty close to the river. I suppose it’s not that surprising that they’d get a lot of parrots out there.
Up our way, out around the Kensington bushland and through Vic Park we tend to get big flocks of black cockatoos. Great to see, even though they also make a hell of a racket. You have to watch out for incoming pine cones as well.
