Bank breaking phone bill

Do you ever get a surprise when your phone bill arrives? Do you despair at large charges from your telecommunications provider? Spare a thought for the British government.

According to this article at News.com.au, Britain’s Foreign Office is investigating the loss of a satellite phone in Iraq. There’s a theory that it was stolen by insurgents who ran up a bill of around $A1.2 million.

The telephone was registered with the British Embassy and was barred from use once the phone company noticed billing discrepancies.

$A1.2 million for a phone bill is pretty steep. You’d have to imagine that it was stolen by people who wanted to cause the government financial pain. Either that or someone in the embassy has teenaged children.
