I still got it ….. sort of

You’ve heard the phrase a red rag to a bull? My ride home last night was a little like that.

Nothing gets the legs pumping faster than seeing another cyclist 500 metres up the road going at a fair pace. I saw the rider ahead and decided that I would catch up so I started some fairly serious hammering.

It took a few minutes but I finally got up to his back wheel. I reckon he was 20 years younger and 30 kg lighter than me but I had bridged the gap.

I sat on his wheel for a while as he pumped out a cracking pace. He lifted the speed a little once he noticed me there. We came to a round-a-bout and he pulled across to let me go through. It was my turn to set the pace. He sat on my wheel for a little while until it was time for me to turn and we parted company.

I continued my journey home at a good pace. I checked my cycle computer at home and noticed that I had a much higher average speed over the journey than normal. Excellent.

So there you have it. I can still match it with younger, fitter cyclists. Mind you, I don’t know that he would have taken an hour to recover after he got home.

  • Hehe i so know what you mean. I get that sometimes on the way to uni. It’s so much easier to go fast when there’s someone infront or behind you. It feels great even if it does wear you out!

  • Hey Rodney, wait’ll you hit 60 (years of age I mean!) It takes longer again to recover! Just had Kelvin Castlehow from Albany join me on the recent Sydney Spring Cycle. Good fun, but leisurely pace.
