Popsticks

I watched something rather remarkable last night.

We spent the evening with friends. After dinner out came the popsticks. Have you ever made a boomerang with popsticks? You get four sticks and put them together by weaving them under or over the others. Each one has to be just in the right place to provide the tension to hold the others together.

James decided that he would make a boomerang and so he sat there working on the project for a very long time. Every time he would try to bend a stick to place it under another one, a popstick on the other side would pop out of place. It’s a tricky enough thing for an adult but especially so for a 7 year old who’s doing it for the first time.

Long after most people would have given up he was still going. He kept at it until he finally made one. Then he continued to make a second and a third.

He was so incredibly pleased with his achievement. After a long time of dealing with the frustration he finally had the payoff.

Our kids are such great teachers aren’t they. I wish I had the kind of patience that James displayed last night.
