Valiant

James and I headed out for a few hours together on Saturday. We went to see the animated movie, Valiant, featuring the voices of Ewan McGregor, John Cleese, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Everett, Ricky Gervais, Hugh Laurie and many others.

It was an entertaining kids movie but it certainly won’t set the world alight. It’s already on DVD overseas and I imagine it’ll go that way here very soon too.

The concept is that some World War II carrier pigeons help to save the day despite attacks from tvillainousous enemy. While kids will love the characters and the battle to get the job done, I wonder how many will really understand the whole premise of the film seeing as it’s based around events from over 60 years ago. Still, it was an OK movie.

As for the movie experience itself, the popcorn was hugely overpriced and the cinema was grubby. The complex was opened 25 years ago and it doesn’t look as if they’ve done any maintenance ever since. My seat felt as if it was going to fall apart at any time. The carpet was worn through in lots of places and while I’m sure that they do try to clean the carpets and the seats, stains are stains and they’re losing the battle. I can only imagine that they intend knocking the whole place down and so they’re not going to pour any money into it in the mean time.

Did I mind that the cinema’s a wreck and that the movie won’t be winning any Oscars? Of course not. I got to spend some dad and son time with just James so it was just wonderful.
