Imagine the scene. There I was this morning, sitting at my office desk, happily munching on my favourite muesli for breakfast.
I had the radio on in the background and was catching up on the latest events from around the world with the 8 o’clock news bulletin when I heard Samantha, 98.5 Sonshine FM’s News Director, say “Coles Supermarkets have recalled a brand of muesli which may pose a health risk to some consumers.”
“OK,” I thought “I bought my muesli from Coles so you’ve got my interest.” I stopped chewing immediately, holding a spoonful of possibly toxic muesli in my mouth. Had someone slipped something nasty in the muesli? Would I suddenly be thrown to the floor in a twitching mess? The fact that I’d eaten a bowl of muesli from the same packet yesterday without ill effect didn’t even enter my mind.
The story continued, “Coles Farmland Tropical Muesli packs are being recalled because some may contain nuts not declared in the ingredients list.”
Phew. Yes, my muesli was even the right brand (or wrong depending on your point of view), Coles Farmland, but I had the Apricot and Almond, not the Tropical. Even so, having some unidentified nuts wouldn’t cause me too many problems. I don’t have any nut allergies that I know about.
Isn’t it amazing how quickly someone can grab our attention when they’re talking about something that has a direct impact on us? The rest of the world just goes past at an amazing speed but when it has a direct bearing on us or those we love, the world just stops.

I’ve also heard Farmland cheese slices may contain traces of cheese.
Well if anyone should know about cheese, it’d be you, Lance. 🙂
