Rodney's Recommendations

Every Wednesday I make a recommendation to check out one of the blogs that I frequent. We all have different tastes so there will be some you like and some you won’t. I simply suggest that you give them the once over to see if they might be something that will interest you.

Today’s choice is Umm Yasmin’s blog, Dervish.

In Umm Yasmin’s own word’s, Dervish is the Godblog of Umm Yasmin, a Muslim feminist living in Melbourne Australia.

Umm Yasmin first began writing an online diary (before they were called “blogs”) back in 1999 but did not seriously begin blogging until late 2003. Since then she has tried to keep readers entertained with a unique (okay weird) perspective on religion, spirituality, feminism, parenting and Melbournian life.

There has been a lot written and said about Muslims over the past several years, mostly by people who don’t know much about Islam, so it’s always interesting to read Dervish for a different point of view. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to live as a Muslim within our western culture, you’ll enjoy the insights this blog can provide.

While I don’t agree with Umm Yasmin’s religious beliefs, I do respect her right to hold the views she does and I’m sure she respects my right to hold the views and beliefs that I do. While Muslims consider Jesus to be a prophet worthy of high honour, as a Christian I believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that through his death and resurrection he reconciles us to God.

Of course it’s not all about religion. There are always plenty of posts about day to day living, work, leisure and raising a family. A lot of the time I simply enjoy reading Dervish because it’s written by a fellow Aussie about the things we all face from day to day.

If you do drop in to check out Dervish, make sure you say hi from me.

While we’re on the subject of recommendations, if you keep a blog, how about a few posts on your blog about some of your favourites. You don’t have to put in a picture of the blog, just let us know which blogs you like and provide a link.

If you ever want to browse some of the other blogs I read each day through Bloglines, you can read your way through THE BLOG LIST in my right hand sidebar.
