A comedy hero

I know that a lot of readers won’t know what I’m talking about here but I’m going to brag about it anyway. A few days ago I spoke to one of my comedy heroes, Grahame Bond. While we only spoke for around 15 minutes it was a real highlight for me. He was extremely interesting, friendly and funny.

Grahame has done everything from qualifying and working as an architect to running his own advertising agency. He has been a presenter for Channel 7’s Better Homes and Gardens, he’s an accomplished musician and composer, amateur archeologist, adventurer and a whole lot more but he’s perhaps best known as Aunty Jack. Yes, that’s him in the dress on the motorbike in the picture.

The Aunty Jack Show was a comedy series that hit Australian screens in the early 70s. Only 13 episodes were ever made and it was very different to anything that we had seen up to that point. While it is very tame by today’s standards, it was considered somewhat controversial in its day. The series was marked by the amount of original and innovative music they created and performed.

The Aunty Jack Show and Tell will come to Perth on Sunday night the 23rd of April and I can’t wait. Grahame Bond has got back together with Rory O’Donoghue to remenisce and to play a lot of their music live in venues around the country. They haven’t worked together in around 15 years but by the revues I’ve seen that hasn’t been a problem. They seem to have slipped into performing together again very well.

I’ll be playing my interview with Grahame on my 98.5 Sonshine FM morning radio programme this Tuesday morning around 11:10 a.m. Perth time. (Click here to see what time that will be wherever you are.) If you’re not in the Perth area you can listen on-line by going to the 98.5 Sonshine FM website and following the links.
