On your bike

As much as I like cycling, I must admit to being lazy. If I’m going somewhere on my bike I pick the shortest route from A to B. Even when I’ve cycled across Australia, I’m happy to ride 200 kilometres in a day as long as it’s the shortest way to get to the next town. I find it very difficult to force myself to do more than necessary.

I enjoy my Saturday morning rides with a bunch of friends because we go cycling for the sake of cycling, and of course a good cup of coffee. When there’s a bunch of other cyclists it’s easier to go the long way around but on my own it just doesn’t happen.

This morning was different. I finally convinced myself to leave earlier and go the long way to work. I didn’t ride too far but my detour more than doubled my normal distance to work. I headed through the Swan Valley then back around towards the radio station.

As a result I’m feeling more energised and ready for the day. I’ve had some time to myself, I got to work early and I can’t wait to do the same tomorrow.

  • Good for you! You make me want to go bike riding.
You biked across Australia? Was that from top to bottom or from side to side?

  • Hey Lolly, time to get your bike out and pump up the tyres. 🙂

I’ve cycled from Perth to Canberra twice, Perth to Adelaide once, Perth to Sydney once and Perth to Hobart once.

I’d love to cycle right around Australia one day but I don’t know if it’ll happen.

  • Wow, I feel really lazy now. Given the choice I definitely would have chosen sleeping rather than waking up to cycle or walk. I’m not sure that it’s because I’m lazy or because I try to do too many things in one day. Probably a combination of the two.

Plus, it’s hard to find enough time to sleep let alone get pumped up for a ride. One day soon maybe, hopefully.

  • Glad for you mate. I used to do different routes, but the first criterion (??) is how much time do you have?

We’re just about to go for a ride here in Kansas City before we have to dismantle the Banana Split. Keep enjoying the riding mate.

  • i happened to click on the sonshine fm site yesterday morning and heard you telling your biking story.
just wondering, do you do that often (use blog stories on air)? it was a great short inspirational story to hear on the radio.

when i get motivated to bike the more scenic (longer) routes to get from point a to b i usually feel a lot better in the end for it too (even when my trip doesn’t go quite as planned– see my blog post on april 1 for explaination)

  • Hi Shawna

A lot of the bits I do on-air work very well as blog posts. When that’s the case I generally adjust them a little and post them. 🙂

Thanks for your kind comments. I’ll head over to your blog now and catch your biking story.
