If you’re in Australia you might be having trouble keeping up with what day it is at the moment. It’s been a bit tough lately.
A couple of weeks ago Good Friday meant that we had a shortened working week. Last week it was a Monday public holiday and this week it’s ANZAC Day. (Australia and New Zealand commemorate the ANZAC Day public holiday on the 25th of April every year to honour the bravery and sacrifice of the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), and of all those who served their country.)
I’m sure that once everyone gets back to work tomorrow it’ll feel like a Monday all over again. It’s always a little strange having a day off in the middle of the week isn’t it?
It might be a little difficult getting back into a regular routine next week without a public holiday, but seeing as I’ll be on holiday I won’t mind too much.

so how many total holidays do you have over there? we have SEVEN. That’s it, seven legal holidays. Not nearly enough.
Here in Western Australia we have 11 public holidays this year.
Sunday and Monday the 1st and 2nd of January.
The 26th of January for Australia Day.
Labour Day on March the 6th.
Good Friday on the 14th of March followed by Easter Monday on the 17th.
ANZAC Day on the 25th of April.
The 5th of June is Foundation Day.
We celebrate the Queen’s Birthday on the 2nd of October.
Monday the 25th of December is Christmas Day followed by Boxing Day on the 26th.
On top of that, most workers have four weeks annual leave each year.
I still work most public holidays. It’s a bit hard to shut down a radio station for 24 hours. When I do work a public holiday I only do my on-air shift and then head home rather than spend the rest of the afternoon working on other things as I would normally.
Hi Rodney,
hehe 🙂
I remember, it was in 1999, we arrived in Carnarvon. We came a long way and had run out of food. The parking lot in front of Woolworths was completedly empty… it was ANZAC Day, the Lonely Planet told us! I think we looked pretty stupid 😉
The parade was funny, too, since all the citizens seemed to take part in the parade and only tourists were looking on, waving.
Oh, Carnarvon was so beautiful! All in all we stayed 8 weeks there, I guess!
Have a great time on Rottnest Island,
Hello Iris – I’ve never actually made it to Carnarvon. I’ve driven as far north as Kalbarri a couple of times and Pauline and I flew to Broome once but Carnarvon’s still one of those places I’d like to visit one day.
Hi Rodney,
yes, Carnarvon is really beautiful. Especially the old prawn jetty – so if you manage to go there, take a fishing rod (or, like me, a lot of books). It´s really nice there, many people go fishing on the jetty. And the big dish is really fascinating. And you can visit a banana plantation…
Yes, the Kalbarri NP is also great and I just love Broome, too! On my last day in Broome I saw that someone came into Sun Pictures with a Pizza!! I couldn´t believe it, I really wanted to stay a day longer to do so, too. But we headed on…
Hey Rodney, we sorta missed out on ANZAC DAY…. although I did phone Aust Consulate today (a long story).
It was fantastic meeting Julie and Jennifer. Thanks for introducing us! Now, if only we can get our VISA sorted out…..
We’ve got it a bit worse here in South Africa. Easter – long weekend. This week – Thursday, Friday and next week Monday off. (And I’m adding an afternoon off today, Wednesday – to make a VERY long weekend).
Unfortunately, the Powers That Be have not thought to provide many public holidays later on – we get a glut at the beginning of the year, then a total drought until Christmas again! Just when you really, really need the break…
It’d be nice if they could space the public holidays evenly throughout the year. 🙂
