It's over

Admission time was 7:00 a.m. That meant that the whole family got up very early for a trip to the hospital.

We got there on time and I waited until my name was called. I signed the form to say that I won’t sue them if I died (actually it was just my Medibank form but that doesn’t sound nearly as impressive) and was then led into the day surgery room to await my fate.

Pauline and the kids came in too so we all chatted for a while until it was time for Pauline to take Emily and James to school. She then returned some time afterwards to find me reading a book about Lance Armstrong and still waiting.

I answered questions from the admission staff and nurses and everything seemed in order.

Many hours later, around 11:30 I think it was, I had some foul tasting spray to numb my throat and I was wheeled off for my ‘procedure’. A needle in the arm, one in the hand, “Please roll onto your side”, a plastic thing whacked into my mouth and ……….

When I woke up I was back in the day surgery area. Eventually I was given something to eat, which was nice considering I’d been fasting since dinner time last night.

Once the nurse was sure I was OK I headed out and Pauline drove me home. I’m so glad that my wonderful wife was able to be there for me throughout.

The staff at the hospital were wonderful and did everything they could to make me feel at ease.

I’m still very tired but I seem to be alright. No ulcer but the doctor did spot one or two things that I can discuss with my own doctor. It’s over.

Thank you so much for all your prayers, kind words and wishes. Even though it was only a small procedure in a day surgery at the hospital, this is the first time in my almost 43 years of life that I’ve been admitted to a hospital.

  • Hi Rodney,

good to see you made it ok!
Just thinking of hospitals makes me sick and nervous – but with your family around and friendly, caring staff it wasnยดt too bad, I hope!

  • Glad to hear all went well Rodney. Looking forward to hearing you on the morning programme again soon.

  • Good to see you came through it okay. I do have to wonder though whether you could have chosen a better date for the procedure. You might have missed the Rapture =).

  • Yippee, glad it went well. It’s very intimidating to have a procedure when your not used to hospitals! I’ve had a few but its still not fun. Hope your dr. has good results to share with you.

  • We’ll keep praying during your recovery time. Happy to hear things went well–it sure helps to have loved ones by your side!

  • now you can add that to the list of things you’ve done in your lifetime ๐Ÿ™‚

    glad you’re okay!

  • Thank you so much for all your kind messages. I’ve been blown away by the support I’ve received in the past week.

Skribe, I did think about the date. Just as well I’m not superstitious. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Was easier than you thought, I bet.

I hope the tests show a cause and then a CURE can be figured out.

You are a fortunate man indeed. You’ve had health, a loving family, and now they are there for you.
