An honest thief

I was reading this morning about a thief in Germany who was so overcome with regret at having stolen a bicycle that he wrote the victim a letter and paid him for the loss.

After the theft was reported, police made an appeal in a local paper for any witnesses to come forward. Not long after that, the victim received an anonymous letter from the thief containing 400 euros, the exact value of the bicycle. The thief said in his note that he was sorry he couldn’t remember where he’d left the bike.

I’d hate to have my bike stolen. It’s my main mode of transport and having it stolen would make getting around pretty difficult. I know that it’s not shiny and new. I bought it in around 6 years ago and I’ve cycled around 40 000 km on it since.

Of course if there are any honest thieves around Perth who want to give me the full replacement value of my bike, I’d be happy to hand it over then go and buy a brand new one.

  • …he couldn’t remember where he’d left the bike.
Have to wonder if he was really in any condition for two wheeled transportation 😉

    40,000km in 6 years… cool!

  • How come I have to read about news from Germany I´m not aware of in your blog? I checked the german news – not a word of it. Thank you, newsman 😉
Amazing, those 40,000km in only six years!!

  • If I was to ride 40 000km over a certain amount of time I would be ok but I doubt I would ever be able to stand my bike up properly again as it would be two tyred:P
