A hot ride

A maximum of 35 degrees (95 Fahrenheit) meant that it was certainly a hot one yesterday.

I started the day with the City of Perth Great Bike Ride. I cycled into Perth and met up with a good friend. We then joined thousands of other people who headed off for a 53 kilometre loop around a section of Perth’s magnificent Swan River.

We cycled on the north side of the river to Fremantle and then returned on the south side. There were a few good hills along the way but apart from the easterly wind on the return leg it was a pretty good journey.

I certainly made sure that I had whacked on plenty of sunscreen before starting and I had plenty to drink to stay hydrated. I drank over 4 litres of fluid during the morning with most of that being good old water.

With the ride to and from the city as well as the 53 kilometre loop I clocked up over 80 kilometres for the morning.

The City of Perth Great Bike Ride involved almost five thousand cyclists riding for three charities. The Heart Foundation, St John of God Foundation Horizon House Project and Hope for Children.

During my radio programme last week on 98.5 Sonshine FM I spoke to the Chairman of the organising committee, Garry Lawrence. You can listen to our chat while you continue to browse by clicking here.

  • I was there too, but missed you. There were heaps of people though so easy to miss seeing someone you know. Yep, it was hot. I was absolutely exhausted by the end of it. It took me half an hour of just sitting in the shade drinking water before my breathing returned to normal and I felt as though I could stand up without my legs giving way from under me! Great fun though.
