Turn off your phone

I found an interesting story from the AAP news service today.

It seems that some Mexican churches are using state-of-the-art technology developed by Israeli electronic warfare experts to silence mobile phones that ring during services.

Four churches are using equipment made by Israeli telecoms equipment firm Netline Communications Technologies to block incoming calls during services.

The Tel Aviv based company was set up in 1998 by former military and defence industry specialists to develop mobile telephone jamming systems, mainly for the security industry.

The signal-jamming equipment is packed into two wall-mounted boxes the size of small hi-fi speakers, with one beside the altar and the other at the church entrance.

I reckon they’re onto something. I can see them being installed around the world, not just in churches, but in restaurants, cinemas, concert halls – even some work places.

Mobile phones are extremely useful tools. Unfortunately, if we let them, they can start to run our lives. I think we do well to remember that they do have an off button.

  • I’ve started more than one presentation by telling people that a mobile phone jamming system is in effect. Basically, if your phone goes off it gets jammed… somewhere… uncomfortable….
