What are you like at saying no?

I’ve got to say I have the utmost respect for the parents of Zhang Yichi, a baby boy formally named China’s 1.3 billionth citizen. They’ve turned down advertising deals from several companies making everything from nappies to infant formula.

Various companies had contacted them, hoping the boy would act as an “image representative” for their products. The family turned down all the invitations, except the offer of insurance provided by an insurance company.

The baby’s father, Zhang Tong, said “It’s lucky to be China’s 1.3 billionth citizen, but it’s unnecessary to act as an image representative for so many products, since Zhang Yichi is too young and too many commercial activities will have negative impact on the boy’s healthy growth.”

Imagine saying no to all those companies offering all kinds of things and no doubt some would be offering reasonable sums of money. The temptation would be to grab what you could and justifying it by saying that it was for the baby’s future. However this couple is looking at more than financial security for their special baby.

Good on them. With parents like that I’m sure he’s got a bright future ahead of him.
