This report from News.com.au tells us of the destruction already caused in Indonesia by an earthquake, but more problems could be on the way with tsunami alerts being sounded throughout the area. The major risk is over for those closest to the quake but there are fears of further damage by another tsunami.
A HUGE earthquake off northwest Indonesia triggered tsunami alerts from Australia to Africa this morning and caused panic in countries hit by giant waves three months ago.
Around 300 people have been confirmed dead in Sumatra, western Indonesia, and there are fears that hundreds more are trapped in buildings that collapsed on the island of Nias, a renowned surfing haven.
Scientists have warned of a possible 5m wave striking the coast of Western Australia after monitoring buoys picked up 10cm waves racing across the surface of the deep ocean.
There has been a warning issued for the Perth area but we’re not expected to suffer any damage if the tsunami reaches us.
UPDATE: While news sources are now saying that the danger of a large tsunami has passed, the death toll in Indonesia is being reported as up to 2000 people. The fear is, as always, that the number of dead will continue to rise in coming days.
