I mentioned in my last post about going to the movies last night and seeing people being checked by metal detectors for cameras or recording devices. It reminded me of being in India last month where we went to Palika Bazaar in Delhi.
Palika Bazaar is situated underground and as you are about to descend the steps, you are greeted by a security man sitting next to a large walkthrough metal detector. If you try to walk past he quickly reminds you that you have to walk through the detector. The interesting thing is that it doesn’t work. There are about half a dozen entries to the bazaar and each one has one of these non-functioning metal detectors.
I know that they don’t work because I’ve walked through them with large amounts of metal on me and they don’t even pretend to beep. I could walk through the detectors with my digital camera in my pocket, my phone, coins, and any other kind of metal that usually resides in my pocket. Maybe they only beep if you’re packing some serious firepower.
I guess they’re a bit like those fake house alarms that people stick on the front of their homes in the hope that it discourages someone from breaking in.

I think I’ll have to post a few ideas on the movie. It was wonderful.
