Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Adrian from Rooview wanted a few more details on the movie Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy which we went to see last night.

I guess that I’m going to have to confess here that I’ve never read the book or seen the TV series. I do, however, own the double album, (remember vinyl?) so I’m reasonably familiar with the story.

I enjoyed the fact that much of the dialogue on the album, which I assume was directly lifted from the book, was used in the film. That gave a comfortable sense of familiarity. At the same time it didn’t feel as if it was just a rehashing.

It had some great visual effects but they weren’t overdone. Rather than relying on big effects, the film relies on the very English humour of the story. There were some very nice pieces of animation used throughout too.

The casting worked well and I especially enjoyed Bill Nighy’s shortish appearance. (Mind you, I like him in anything he does so I’m biased.)

I’m sure it helped that I had a background understanding of the story but I reckon that newcomers to the story will still enjoy the movie.

The movie is a nice peice of understated humour and escapism. You won’t find too many belly laughs but there’s a gentle humour that will have you leaving the cinema smiling.
