Don’t you love it when you see your hard work pay off?
Trying to teach kids to respect each other can seem like a pretty tough task. Emily and James love each other to bits but they also know how to push each others buttons.
It was interesting a couple of days ago to see our kids playing with some friends. 6 year old James was doing a few things to annoy his 9 year old sister. Emily was getting frustrated with him. In the middle of all this, they decided to play Australian Idol and so Emily started singing.
She has a wonderful voice but obviously not everyone can spot talent as well as I can because the kids they were playing with started laughing a little. Straight away James chimed in, “Don’t laugh at her song”.
With just 5 words he showed that if anyone was going to make fun of his sister – they were going to have to deal with him. It was his natural and immediate reaction.
I grabbed James and took him away from the other kids to give him a big hug and tell him how proud he had made me. All those lessons about being part of a family and sticking together are obviously getting through. Our kids aren’t perfect – but I reckon they’re pretty darn close.
