One of those days

Ever have one of those days? I had a very disturbed sleep which meant that I was running late this morning. Then as I was cycling to work my back tyre decided to create a close, personal friendship with a stray piece of glass.

I had my first flat tyre in many months just last week so I knew that my spare tube had a hole in it too. The situation was still salvageable because I always carry a tube repair kit, it just meant that I needed to spend a little extra time repairing a tube before I was on the road again. It was not a good start to the day.

So there I was with the back wheel removed from my trusty bike on a nice piece of lawn at the side of someone’s house in a backstreet of Morley. Just at that point, the owner of the house was leaving and he backed up to me to see if I needed a hand. I told him I’d be right, that I just had to fix the puncture and get back on the road. He started a conversation and then offered to put my bike in the back of his station wagon and give me a lift. Normally I’d be happy to be independent but today, it was just what I needed.

The good Samaritan turned out to be the local Anglican minister and although I’d never met him before, he has had an association with 98.5 Sonshine FM over many years. We had a great chat in the few minutes it took him to transport me and my bike to work.

The day is a long way from over but what started out as a pretty average day is already looking a whole lot better.
