Gate Crashers

The idea was for a quiet picnic by the river. We got together with extended family on Friday night down at Point Walter.

The cloudy, cooler conditions had obviously kept most people away so we had the area almost to ourselves. There were only a couple of other groups enjoying the evening but the seagulls were there in force. With so few people, the entire flock decided that they could focus their attention on us.

We weren’t giving anything away so they paced up and down watching us eat, looking for an opportunity to dart in and steal something. Of course wherever seagulls gather in search of food there’s always the menacing seagull who puffs up his feathers, sticks his beak out, makes threatening noises and chases off the others with his intimidating behaviour. It’s like he’s saying, “Get lost, pal. I’m getting the food.” Well sorry Mr. Seagull, but you’re not getting anything from me and neither are your friends.

I wonder if they know that it’s not only illegal to feed them but that it’s not polite turn up at a picnic without bringing something to share.
