Yours, Mine & Ours

We had a family night out last night. We headed off to the movies to see a preview screening of Yours, Mine & Ours. It’s a remake of the 1968 movie of the same name about two large families combining to become one.

This time around the dad is played by Dennis Quaid with Rene Russo as the mum. It’s a great piece of family fun. The story revolves around the new family created when 8 kids from a very disciplined family combine with 10 kids from a family where almost anything goes.

Some very funny and some very heartwarming moments throughout. A lot of it’s predictable but I don’t mind that if it’s just a piece of escapism. Our plan was to enjoy a family night out and this movie certainly delivered on that score.

The original film had a cast including Lucille Ball, Henry Fonda, Van Johnson and Tom Bosley. It was based on the book ‘Who Gets the Drumsticks’ by Helen Eileen Beardsley. It was the true life story of how she, a widow with 10 children, married a widower with 8 children. In real life they went on to have two more children together. Strangely enough Helen died on the same day as Lucille Ball, the actress who portrayed her in the original movie.

I’m sure it’d be a lot of fun having 18 kids under one roof but I think I’d rather stick with just the two that we already have.
