I found it

After a few experiments I think I’ve found my new route to work. Instead of the regular 6.5 kilometres from home to the studios, this morning I headed in the opposite direction.

My ride this morning took me into the Swan Valley up to Guildford, to Midland, past the old Midland rail workshops, into the Helena Valley, back through Guildford and on towards work.

It was a wonderful 33 kilometre ride past paddocks of cows and sheep, up and down some gentle rises before heading back into some more residential and commercial areas. What a way to start a day. Just enough to get everything working and energise me without wearing me out for the rest of the day. I may add to the distance in the coming months but this route will be just right for a while.

I was beginning to slow down in one section of the ride when another cyclist came out of nowhere and went past me. Red rag to a bull. I picked up the pace and passed him a couple of hundred metres later as we rounded a corner. He then sat on my back wheel (for the non-cyclists, that means he was cycling very closely behind me taking advantage of my slipstream) for a couple of kilometres before he came around to the front and I sat on his wheel until he turned off some time further up the road. We parted with a friendly wave and a “seeya later”. Nothing like another rider to help get the blood pumping.

If there’s a nice fine day soon I’ll try to remember to take our camera so you can see the new route.

One of the great parts about it is that there are so many shortcuts along the way that even if I’m running late and can’t do the full course, I’ll be able to get some extra kilometres on the bike.

  • That seems like a dramtic increase in your travelling distance, but i’m sure you take plenty of rides much longer then that.
Almost makes me want to take out my bike and go for a ride myself. almost…

  • Yes, we are heading into the rainy season.

I’ll still be cycling in the rain but on the really stormy days I’ll probably just rid directly to work rather than take the detour. Otherwise, rural scenery always looks wonderful with a little rain falling. 🙂
