I was amazed to wake up yesterday morning and see the back page of Perth’s Sunday Times. A rather incredible headline greeted me.
Dockers resurrect season with 15 point win over Carlton.
Oh please. They did nothing of the sort. They simply won the second game of the AFL season.
The headline suggests that the Fremantle Dockers’ season was in tatters and that they had to perform some kind of miracle to get themselves back in the picture. Even though their first round effort was fairly hopeless, it was just one game. Yes they lost but so did half the clubs in the competition. No one was saying that the others who lost in the first round were doomed and had to ‘resurrect’ their ‘season’.
They have now won a game and lost a game. It’s way too early in the season to say that they’re doing well or in need of urgent help. In another ten weeks we’ll have a better indication of how all the clubs are doing.
The team I support, West Coast Eagles, is one of three clubs to have won both of their first two games. Does that mean that they are the power teams of 2006? No. It means that they’ve done very well so far and in around ten weeks time we’ll have a better indication of how their seasons are going.
I don’t think anyone does themsleves any favours by overstating their case.
Congratulations to the Dockers and the Eagles for good wins.

the three teams that have won both games probably will go really well this year though. π particularly the team on top of the ladder at the moment….hehe
so true Rodney, so true.
The hysterics surrounding the Dockers are amazing, even for this two team town.
Unfortunately π , very well down to the Eagles over in Adelaide, they may have found a full forward.
Well, I’m a Carlton fan, what can I say?. I don’t think anybody expected the Blues to do anything this season, even after the win over Melbourne. Having seen how hopelessly my team performed last year, I’m not sure winning that match could be called the “resurrection” of Fremantle’s season — regardless of whether it’s round 2, 10 or 22.
I was wondering if you went for the dockers or the eagles. And you didn’t win that last game, you stole it from us. 2 points isn’t a win. π
But then, if the crows had been 2 points in front, it most definitely would have been a win π
