A night at the theatre

A couple of days ago I mentioned that I had interviewed Henri Szeps and that Pauline and I would be off to see his one man show, Why Kids?, at the Subiaco Arts Centre last night.

The show was an absolute delight. It was funny, heart warming, inspiring and thoughtful. Henri talked about his early years, being born in Lausanne, Switzerland in a World War II refugee camp then being shuttled between his mother in Paris and foster parents in Switzerland. While his Jewish mother was pregnant with him she narrowly avoided being taken to a concentration camp to be killed. The story of how she escaped death was quite chilling.

After outlining his own upbringing and his fear of committment and stability, Henri talked about his marriage and the journey of bringing up his own two boys. There was a very strong theme of committment to healthy family life and a couple of very honest recollections of some of his own failings along the way.

Between the story telling and the jokes, Henri sang a handful of songs. He’s a truly versatile performer and the evening was very enjoyable. I hope he returns to Perth soon with whatever his next project turns out to be.
