As I cycled to work this morning I noticed a young guy in a rather noisy TF Cortina. He had obviously put a fair bit of work into the car to get it sounding just the way he wanted it as well as making sure that the rest of the car is in very good condition.
I remember when the TF Cortina was released back in 1980, the year I got my license. I had a 1972 TC Cortina, which was a great car, but the TF was my dream car. Strange to think that was almost 27 years ago.
I still reckon the TF’s a good looking car but it’s not my dream car anymore. In fact, I can’t really say that I have a dream car any more. I’m much happier on my bike than drooling over a car.
Mind you, if we’re talking about dream vehicles, a Bianchi in celeste green (like the one in the picture) would suit me just fine.
Isn’t it intersting how the things that seemed so enticing in the past seem to lose their appeal over time? Are there things that you desperately wanted when you were younger and now you’re left scratching your head wondering what you ever saw in them?
How about dream vehicles? Was there a ca that you thought was just the greatest piece of automotive engineering you’d ever encountered? Did you ever own one? Does it still have any appeal for you?

Isn’t it odd how our “wants/needs” change over the years? Practicality does take over.
When I was around 20, I spotted a car that I had to have…it was a Toyota Celica. These days (many years later) I wonder why I ever craved that car. I never wanted a sports car after that. About 6 or 7 years ago, I began noticing the cute little Honda CR-V. It wasn’t practical at the time for me, but it was the car I “talked” my daughter into allowing us to help her buy. She loves it now. As for me – all I want is reliability, safety, and something that sits high – I’m really short and like to see what’s ahead of the car in front of me. I’m not asking much, except that it also needs to be affordable and get terrific gas mileage! 😉
Old Fords have been ingrained in my dreams for as long as I can remember.
The ultimate was always the Phase 3 GTHO (XY Falcon) – and seeing that one sold for $650 000 the other week I doubt I will ever own one.
However when I was going for my learners in 1997 the current ‘hot’ Ford was the Falcon EL XR6 and XR8 – I thought they were great cars with the different ‘quad’ headlights.
When I got my license I bought an 86 Laser, but when it was time to upgrade i 2004 the first car I looked at was a 97 EL XR6, I fell in love with them all over again.
I’ve had it for 3 years and still get a bit of a grin whenever I put the foot down – and think it’s still the best looking XR model over the AU and BA models!
I still drool when seeing a red and black Wrangler Jeep, but I know I can’t have one because all my kids won’t fit, neither will it be safe to drive a toddler in a booster seat around, but hey, I can only stare! 🙂
My Dad had a Ford Cortina back in 1982! It was beige! 😀
My friend and cycle buddy has a Bianchi! It`s black with gold writing etc!
My bike is a Specialized! I havn`t been out much lately because of the all the terrible stormy weather we are experiencing here in the UK at the moment. It`s depressing 🙁
Anyway, as for cars, I really love the classic Triumph Spitfire or the Triumph Herald. That`s when Great Britain actually made cars rather than just assembling them here. We have an MG at the moment, it`s a good car but drinks a fair bit of petrol!
Aston Martin DB9 is rather lovely mind you! 🙂
