Simply Living Book Club

Narnia.jpgI hate to admit it but I’ve never read any of the Narnia series of books by C.S. Lewis.

That’s all about to change with the Simply Living Book Club.

Life Skills Trainer, Jill Bonanno, joined me yesterday on 98.5 Sonshine FM for our weekly radio segment, Simply Living. We looked at some different ideas for New Year’s Resolutions and how to keep the ones we make. One of the things we talked about was making more time to read in 2009.

To help our listeners set their own goals for reading this year we’ve started a book club. Each month we’ll suggest a book and then give listeners a month to read it before we discuss the book on-air, inviting people to call in with their thoughts or even email what they thought of the book. We’re hoping to look at a mixture of new titles and some of the classics.

To get the ball rolling we’re going to be reading The Lion, The With and the Wardrobe, part of the Chronicles of Narnia. The generous people at Koorong gave five of our listeners a book containing the complete series of Narnia titles so that they can enjoy being part of the book club. They’ve also given me a copy so that I can read along. I’m looking forward to spending a few hours immersed in the writings of C.S. Lewis.

Have you read The Lion, The With and the Wardrobe recently? (No, I don’t mean have you seen the movie.) Would you like to be part of the book club? Maybe you can grab a copy and read or re-read the story before the end of the month. You can leave your thoughts in the comments section of this post. I’d also be interested in your suggestions for books we could read in the coming months.

  • Narnia is not Lewis’ best work, but it is not bad. Just keep in mind it is a children’s story. For a more thought provoking Lewis parable check out The Great Divorce.

  • What a great idea Rodney. Like you I haven’t read any of the Narnia series. Loved the movies though.

  • I read the entire series, starting with the first book – Magicians Nephew in Year 6 (MANY years ago). At the time I had no idea it was anything to do with Christianity as I had nothing to do with Christianity. Since then it’s one of my favourite series. I was so pleased when they re-did the movie (the BBC version is sadly lacking) and I can’t wait to see Prince Caspian when we get a copy and then the next dvd, Voyage of the Dawn Treader whenever that comes out. My advice with the books is the let your imagination run wild! Enjoy

  • i just finished the whole series again – not sure ow many times i have read it now. i just finished reading it to my second daughter. i do suggest though you start with the first book, the magicians nephew and then read the lion the witch and the wardrobe after it.
we have also been enjoying the movies

  • I have read the Chronicles of Narnia several times as an adult. Each time I read them they get better. I read Prince Caspian just before the movie came out last year and the book was better than the movie. Any ideas of what books you might be reading in the months ahead?
